29 Times The World Cried During Derek Jeter's Final Season

By Sarah Hearon on September 29, 2014

Derek Jeter played his last game in Yankee pinstripes on Sunday, September 28th. For all baseball fans, Jeter’s exit from Major League Baseball is the end of an era, and the tears have not stopped flowing since he made his retirement announcement.

1. When Jeter announced this season was his last. He explained, “Winning the World Series as a rookie shortstop, being named the Yankees’ captain, closing the old and opening the new Yankee Stadium. Through it all, I’ve never stopped chasing the next one. I want to finally stop the chase and take in the world.”

2.  When Jeter’s former teammates Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada joined him for the ceremonial first pitch at his final home opener.

3. When he played in his final All-Star Game.

4. When the Michael Jordan commercial was released and the #RE2PECT campaign was launched.

5. And then the Gatorade commercial.

6. When the Yankees held a ceremony for Jeter on September 7th, also known as “Derek Jeter Day.”

7. When Jeter took the field for the first time during his last game at Yankee Stadium on September 25th.

8. When we heard his final “roll call” from the bleacher creatures.

9. When we saw that the Core 4 (Pettitte, Rivera and Posada) and Joe Torre were in attendance.

10. Every time Derek took a deep breath during the game and looked like he was going to cry.

11. Every time we saw his parents.

12. When his nephew, Jalan, tipped his hat the way Jeter does.

13. When the crowd cried and chanted “Thank you, Derek.”

14. When he hit his now famous walk-off single to win the game for the Yankees.

15. When he realized he won the game for his team.

16. And he celebrated with his teammates.

17. When they poured the Gatorade on him.

18. When he took his final lap around Yankee Stadium.

19. When he wished the Baltimore Orioles good luck in the playoffs and we remembered the Yankees didn’t make the playoffs this year.

20. When he was asked about his thoughts during his final at-bat at Yankee Stadium and he answered, “Don’t cry.”

21. When The Boston Red Sox, the Yankees ultimate rivals, recognized Jeter before his final game on September 28th.

22. When we saw the Red Sox scoreboard.

23. When Jeter met former Boston College baseball player Peter Frates, who was behind the ice bucket challenge to raise money for ALS research. Jeter participated in the challenge earlier this season.

24. When he hit an RBI single.

25. And we realized it was his last hit. Ever.

26. Every time they showed him watching the rest of the game from the dugout.

27. When Jeter’s former teammate Bernie Williams played “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the 7th inning stretch.

28. When Jeter told the reporter in his last post-game interview ever that he was planning on “hiding out for a while” now that his career is over, and we realized it could be a while before we see him again.

29. When he thanked the fans one last time.

Farewell Captain!
