College students everywhere can attest to the fact that caffeine is a necessity to surviving the long days spent in the classroom and the even longer nights spent in the library.

One caffeinated beverage that stands out among the rest is coffee. With almost 400 million cups consumed daily by Americans alone, it’s easy to see that we love our coffee.

However, there’s a lot of misconceptions surrounding the caffeinated beverage regarding if it’s actually healthy for you. We’ve all heard of the possible harmful outcomes that comes from drinking coffee, such as the myth that drinking coffee at a young age could stunt your growth.

Thankfully there’s research to prove that the consumption of coffee has its benefits! Read ahead to see why coffee should be your go-to drink for surviving the tiring days of college life…

1. Coffee helps boost your metabolism.

Want a quick pick-me-up before your next work out? Take a sip of coffee! Studies have shown that drinking coffee can increase the rate of your metabolism significantly. Helping you lose more calories and burn those fatty acids.

2. Coffee can lower your risk of developing liver disease (especially if you drink alcohol).

A study published in 2006 reported a decrease in risk of developing alcohol-related liver disease in participants who drank a cup of coffee each day.”For each cup of coffee they drank per day, participants were 22 percent less likely to develop alcoholic cirrhosis,” reported Eurekalert.org. The study also noted that tea drinking was not found to be related in the study. Showing that it wasn’t just the caffeine in the coffee that helped the participants. So when you wake up after a long night at the bars why not make a quick cup of coffee? You’ll feel better and be doing your liver a service in the process.

3. Coffee drinkers are found to have lower rates of depression.

study released in 2013 found that people who chose to consume sweeter beverages had a higher association with developing depression than people who consumed a cup of java instead.

4. Coffee can make you more intelligent.

According to a report done by CNN.com, if you’re sleep-deprived and consume coffee all of your measurable brain functions will improve from your reaction time, vigilance, logical reasoning, etc!

5. Coffee is a great source of antioxidants.

We all know that eating healthy in college is a struggle but one surprising way to get your antioxidants is through a cup of coffee! According to a study released in 2005, the number one way American’s got their antioxidants was from coffee! Of course your body still needs it’s fruits and veggies but a cup of coffee sure goes a long way!
