My "Grey's Anatomy" Season 12 Wish List

By Elana Goodwin on September 5, 2015

On September 24, long-running medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy” will return for its 12th season on ABC. After countless characters have left, gotten together, broken up, and died, and numerous disasters have plagued the doctors and hospital, it’s hard to imagine there’s any ground left to cover this year.

But after Patrick Dempsey’s character Derek Shepherd was killed off at the end of last season, leaving the “Mer” half of MerDer behind, it opened up new stories and paths for creator Shonda Rhimes.

Here’s my wish list for what I’d like to see in season 12.

1. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) being strong and going on with her life. As much as I cried during the last episodes of season 11 and struggled with losing McDreamy, I went through the stages of grief quickly and accepted the fact that he’s gone and that it might actually be a good thing.

The months where Derek was in D.C., Meredith seemed more like the character viewers fell in love with years ago – a talented and accomplished surgeon and woman in her own right. I hope in season 12 the story continues following Meredith of old, along with Zola, Bailey, and baby Ellis, and while I don’t want “Grey’s” to skirt dealing with the aftermath of Derek’s death, even months later, I want the show to focus more on Mer’s future.

2. Christina (Sandra Oh) checking in on her person. The fact that we didn’t get to see Christina at Derek’s funeral or in the time-jump at the end of last season pissed me off. As a twisted sister to Meredith, while it was alluded to that she came and checked on Meredith for a while, I’d have loved to actually see Oh onscreen and reunited with her person.

Since Christina is one of the few characters who left the show by moving to a new job in Switzerland and Oh ended her time on “Grey’s” on good terms, the door is open for her to come back, and in season 12, I really wish she does, even if just for one episode. Just one!

3. More focus on Alex (Justin Chambers) and Jo (Camilla Luddington). Jolex was definitely neglected last season what with Alex being Meredith’s new person sort of taking over his screen time. As a big fan of the couple, I was happy when Jo bought them an apartment (disgusting as it may be) so she and Alex can live together without Meredith and her brood. More of Jolex and their relationship in season 12, please.

4. Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) finally becoming a couple. I’m a believer in the whole will they-won’t they question but in this case, I’ve had enough and the dice better land on “will they.”

As someone who watched “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff “Private Practice” through all six seasons, I’ve seen Amelia deal with a lot. And now with her brother Derek dead to boot, Amelia needs someone to be there for her and that someone should be Owen. Now to come up with a couple name for them … Owmelia?

5. Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) getting along but moving on. I loved Calzona but after all the drama surrounding them in recent seasons, I was glad for them when they decided to divorce. Since then, not a whole lot has happened to them as they share custody of Callie and Mark Sloane’s daughter Sofia (RIP McSteamy). It’s definitely time for them to get some serious romantic prospects on the horizon.

6. Some real romantic prospects for Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton). Speaking of romantic prospects, Mer’s newly discovered half-sister (RIP Lexie) Maggie deserves some cute guys thrown her way this season. Same goes for Stephanie, especially since her only real potential guy last season turned out to be a high school student (Ugh).

Let’s get some more men on “Grey’s Anatomy” – and I mean that besides Martin Henderson (who starred on the short-lived ShondaLand show “Off the Map”), who’s slated to join the cast as a regular for season 12. One man + lots of single women on the show = not enough men.

7. Happiness for Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew) together somehow. My heart broke when Jackson and April’s son, Samuel, died last season shortly after he was born. And I understood how April had to grieve and to do that she needed to get away and so she joined Owen in the army as a trauma surgeon for three months.

I sympathized with Jackson’s frustration when April continued to extend her deployment, and I totally understood his ultimatum at the end of last season that if she goes on tour again, he won’t wait for her. That being said, I am not okay with Japril breaking up and April was a total badass in the final episodes in season 11 and her staying at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital is something that needs to happen in season 12 because this couple simply cannot break up after all they’ve been through. I won’t allow it.

So there you have it – my wish list for this season of “Grey’s Anatomy;” but no matter what happens on the show this year, Shonda Rhimes will continue to own my Thursday nights. “Grey’s Anatomy” forever!
