Shows/Movies That Will Enhance Your Logic Skills

By Francine Fluetsch on October 6, 2015

This article is brought to you by Kaplan, the leader in test prep for over 90 standardized tests, including the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, and MCAT.

After a long day of school and work, the last thing you want to do is get right to your mass amounts of homework; you are just too fried for that level of concentration at the moment.

You decide to watch a show or a movie, but feel bad vegging out since you do have a lot to get done. Well, what if I told you that you can watch these shows/movies with less guilt because as you watch you will be sharpening your logic skills? These are some must-sees if you want to procrastinate but still feel productive.

“Side Effects”

This is one of my favorite movies ever because of how much it makes you think and put the pieces together yourself. Don’t watch the trailer, because some give too much away and then it’s no fun; just trust me on this one.

You won’t know who to trust, and as you keep watching, you’ll pick sides that might be right, but might also be terribly wrong. The acting is wonderful, and at the end you’ll want to show the movie to everyone! It is currently on Netflix, so go watch it right now.

It is not scary but is suspenseful, and might be a little mature for young children, so be advised.

“Cash Cab”

Cash Cab is a game show in New York where a guy drives around, picks random people up in his cab, and they can answer trivia questions to win up to $1,000 if they can complete the questions before they reach their destination. This one is fun to watch, and will also help you brush up on your trivia skills.

How many would you have been able to answer before you got kicked out of the cab? This show really shows the importance of brushing up on your history and politics!

“Catch Me If You Can”

This film, starring a very young Leonardo DiCaprio, is based on a true story of a young man who successfully conned millions of dollars using fake checks in different fake professions. The fact that this is a true story keeps you on the edge of your seat, and makes you marvel at how smart this criminal is and how long it takes for anyone to really notice what is happening.

This is a great film to engage your brain, and all ages will get a kick out of it.

“Inception”

“Inception” was so well made that it still has people arguing about the meaning of the ending. This one will definitely put your logic skills to work as you navigate through the dreams and reality, and whether or not the main character has been engulfed in a lie the whole entire time.

Even if you have seen this movie already, it will be beneficial to watch it again. You will be able to catch things you didn’t notice the first go around, and might even change your opinion about what you see in the end. You can’t be a mindless couch potato for this movie; your brain will be constantly engaging with the material, trying to calculate what is happening and what it means.

“Lost”

This show may or may not drive you crazy. They introduce a lot of things and then leave them hanging in the air for a while, so you have to attempt to put two and two together, which is really hard to do with a show that uses some of our logic and then goes beyond that.

As I’m sure you have heard, the ending is still fought about (personally hated it) but the show in general will keep your brain working while you are taking your much-needed break.

Warning: This show is incredibly addictive and since every episode pretty much ends with a cliffhanger, you might never stop watching. Limit yourself to one or two episodes or you might end up binge watching until you get your answers. It’s also more fun to watch it with someone else so you can hash out what the heck just happened after each episode.

“Myth Busters”

“Myth Busters” is fun to watch because they usually do really over-the-top things, but you really learn a lot in each episode. One that I remember was when they prove that the landing on the moon couldn’t have been fake by putting a flag in a room with no gravity and they observed if it moved or not (to see if the footage of the flag matched up with what would really happen).

Very interesting and definitely makes you feel smarter every time you watch because they do things that you could bring up casually in a conversation later.

These are just a few shows/films that you can use when you need a break but want to feel like you are learning something from it. Sometimes your brain will need a full break, and that’s when you can watch something that doesn’t need your brain to work, but these shows will definitely test your knowledge skills and might even teach you a thing or two you didn’t know before.
