New Year, New Hair, Same Me

By Amanda Cohen on January 11, 2016

I am all for having fresh starts, but when it comes to styling your hair, this whole new year, new me mantra is not applicable.

In my opinion, there is no such thing as the top 10 most popular hairstyles for 2016 because styling is completely dependent on hair color, hair thickness, head shape, facial structure, and preferable hair part.

Here are a few hair-dos that seem to be making quite the statement in the first week of 2016.

The Middle Part: Ladies and gentleman, I am here to tell you that the middle part is making a huge comeback! I was skeptical at first, but recently I have also been opting for the middle part over my usual left side part.

The best aspect of the middle part is that it works with all hair lengths, all hair colors, and all thicknesses. Whether you decide on curls or pin-straight hair, the middle part adds a simple elegance that cannot go wrong.

The Fish-Tail: To spare everyone of confusion, I am not talking about a goldfish’s tail … I’m talking about the fish-tail braid. The fish-tail is similar to a French braid, but instead the individual pieces point inward rather than outward.

This hairstyle works when braided to the side or when braided straight back, plus it can be dressed up or dressed down. This hairstyle, however, is better for people with thicker hair at a medium to long length.

Short Hair Paired with Bangs: Personally, I try to keep my hair long just because I think it looks better with my face shape. However, celebrities like Taylor Swift are not only rocking short hair, but have front bangs along with the hair.

I used to think that front bangs were a little much, but with the right type of hair, it looks fantastic. I recommend only getting front bangs with short hair if you have finer hair, compared to extremely thick hair. With thick hair, the bangs will look a little too bulky and your hair will look frizzier than it should.

The Messy Bun Half Up, Half Down: Individually, the messy bun and the half up, half down looks have been on fire. Recently, people have combined the two styles to make for the perfect casual look.

For many head shapes, the full messy bun makes the face look too round, but having some of the hair down complements all bone structures, while also removing any annoying hair pieces from your face.

The messy-bun look is perfect for going to class, going to casual dinners, or even for a night out with the girls (depending on the outfit choice of course).

The Sleek Ponytail: Ponytails are my favorite hairstyle because they can be casual, fancy, and pull all of the unruly hair I have out of my face. The gelled back, sleek ponytail is perfect for formal events or even a night out with friends.

This hairstyle works with all hair colors and all hair lengths. Women with longer hair might opt for a high pony while women with shorter hair might go for a low pony that they pull to one side and lay on their shoulder.

Side-Parted Curls: Curls are always in style, but the side-parted curls looked especially great with short hair. The curls themselves shouldn’t be ringlets, but also shouldn’t be extremely loose … it’s important to find a nice happy medium between the two when wearing this hairstyle.

Also, rather than making the part perfectly visible using a comb, maybe make the part a little less defined to add a whole new dimension of style to the look.

Edgy Short Hair: Edginess can only be pulled off by certain people, but when it’s done right it looks unbelievable. The key to an edgier style is to refrain from a definitive part and have hair that is not monochromatic.

Top-head volume is also important with this type of look and layering is a key feature to this style. This look gives the allusion that you effortlessly styled it while also exhibiting beauty and grace.

I know everyone was flabbergasted when Miley Cyrus cut off her luscious locks and opted for an edgier look, but you have to admit that she looks pretty fantastic.

The best part about hair is that you can do a thousand different things with the locks that you have. Even the hairstyle suggestions given have hundreds of variations alone and can be modified to fit your own personal style.

Whether you decide to dye your hair purple or ombré, or even get extensions or cut everything off, you will look absolutely fantastic. Just play to your face shape and the look you are going for.

Some hairstyles are better for elegant events, while others are better for going to class … you will know which style is appropriate for which event, just use your best judgment!
