4 Ways to Decide If You Need a Tutor

By Allie Mitchell on January 25, 2017

Some students grasp information better than others. These students can write notes, look over them once, and ace the test. Others choose to not write any notes and still perform with excellence. Some students may not do so well on test number one, but once they understand the format of the test, they can do well on the second test.

However, there are students who do not experience these situations and thus need an extra set of hands to guide them. These students need a bit more academic help because they learn in different ways from other students. These students desire extra guidance or teaching to help them achieve and work to their maximum potential.

This is where tutoring comes into play.

Tutoring, or supplemental instruction as some universities call it, helps you when you don’t quite understand something. You can use your school’s tutors, which are usually people who have done well in the class before so they know what they are doing and how things work, or you could go off and find your own tutor.

There are a number of individuals who are offering their skills in different subjects and who are ready to help you. Although, looking for a private tutor on your own could cost you a good bit of money. Before you start looking for a tutor at all, you need to figure out what you need tutoring in exactly, like what subjects deserve more attention than others and what are you majorly struggling in. Students don’t always go looking for help because they think they can help themselves and that is usually when they start panicking towards the end of the semester because they don’t think they will make the grade.

Your job as a good student is to identify early on when you need the help so you can end the semester on a high note. Here are four situations that could indicate it’s time to find a tutor.

1. When you experience work overload: Sometimes your homework in certain classes can take you a good chunk of time to complete. When you realize your homework is starting to take you a lot longer to complete, you may want to take a step back and consider your options. You might need help understanding what you are learning. Certain subjects you learn tend to work with each other, so if a tutor can help you combine two subjects in one, why not take a shot at it? The tutors are there to ease your burden, not stress you out more.

2. When you put in hard work but get little results: Have you noticed that you work really hard with little result? You study every night, do your homework on time, and finish your reading, but when you go to take your tests you always seem to come up short? That’s happened to me before and I had to start seeking extra help which paid off in the end.

You are doing all the work, which is great, but you may not understand things properly or the way you are teaching yourself isn’t really the best option for you. You may need a tutor to help you pinpoint what you are doing wrong and to lead you in the right direction.

3. When your motivation drops: There is a point when students aren’t making the grade or when everything is so overwhelming that homework just seems to mash together and not make sense, that they just start being recluse from the world. They have zero motivation for anything at all, school being at the top of their list. Giving up is never an option and you shouldn’t ever consider it one in the first place. There are tutors that are available to help you reinvent the way you study for things and to help you make sure you get back on track to make the grade.

4. When you start asking friends for help: Some students find it hard to ask their teachers or student assistants for help, so they go to their one friend who did well in the class and ask for their help. This is a good method, but sometimes, those people get busy or the way they are teaching it to you isn’t working anymore.

When this happens you may want to consider hiring a tutor; they can maybe teach you something multiple ways until you understand what works for you. Your friends are nice, but sometimes it is better to get another opinion to help you make the grade.
