Free Pop-Up Concert at Strozier Library

Want to go to a concert…in a library? No, you didn’t misread that. There is indeed a concert in a library. The College of Music Music Entrepreneurship Class presents a free Pop-Up Concert at Strozier Library Wednesday, February 21st from 1:30PM to 2:15PM.

Earlier today, Florida State University’s College of Music posted this information as an “event” on Facebook with absolutely no description. Mysterious, right? The only information available is the date, time, and place in which the event takes place – as well as a flyer for the event.

The flyer provides what can be assumed to be a sneak peak of what’s to come: Cee-Lo Green’s “Forget You”, Pizazzolla Tango, Brahm’s “Hungarian Dance”, and Radiohead’s “Creep”. With music dipped in just about every genre, this event will likely draw in quite a diverse audience.

This “Pop-Up Concert” is part of a series with the College of Music – a great source of entertainment through a variety of performances that come out of nowhere. This specific Pop-Up Concert does not have any people “invited”, however it is open to the public.

Pop-Up concerts are quite popular right now amongst other colleges as well. They are short musical performances in different locations around a certain area (in this case, Florida State University). The audience has access to information about the event ahead of time so that they can attend on the respective date and time, however everything else about the performance itself is a mystery.

The juxtaposition of having a concert in (or outside) of a library is fascinating and brilliant.  The audience is left to wonder where exactly in or outside of such a complex building the performance will be in or at. Who will be performing? What kind of ensemble is it – is it a large ensemble, a small ensemble, strings, or wind instruments? Is there more to the program then what’s on the flyer? You probably have never imagined a concert in such an unexpected place, but now you can experience it. Not knowing what the experience is going to be like might even be the reason you end up going.

In fact, most audience members typically attend Pop-Up concerts solely out of sheer curiosity as to what the event is going to be like. With the lack of knowing who is going and what the event will be like, you simply don’t want to be missing something special.
