The "Finally" Feeling

By Meredith McDevitt on March 28, 2017

As college students, we eat, sleep, and breathe schoolwork. Studying late at night for exams the next morning, typing a paper for a week and praying for a decent grade, and on top of everything we’re supposed to somewhat get our adult lives together and strive for a career.

This “reachable” career, of course, has to pay our bills and fulfill our passions in our specific area of work. On top of all of this, we have to have somewhat of a social life, maybe meet a significant other, and learn the ropes of real life living (laundry, cooking, cleaning). There are numerous fields of life a college student has to learn quickly wrapped up into four years before actually stepping foot in these ideal positions.

Many students get lost in this process of learning and only complete a few items off of the real life checklist. However, once we feel the feeling of “finally,” our lives seem a little simpler and put together. What do I mean when I say finally as a feeling? The feeling where you are on top of the workload, home chores, social life, and career climbing, the feeling where things are smooth sailing and the wheels are on the right track — the finally feeling.

Sometimes that finally feeling doesn’t happen right away. Many of us did the complete opposite of finally, maybe even freshman year. We focused on the social outings when we should have been focused on the library outings. Sooner or later we’re getting the life talk from our parents and how we have to stay focused on what really matters.

However, what really matters? The answer is simply the finally feeling. It’s the ideal time when a 20-year-old feels this feeling of success for once —  when their parents stop nagging them about responsibilities, when resumé building becomes fun, and most importantly when you actually want to get out of bed and start the day.

Whatever fuels your excitement to get out of bed and learn something new, hold onto that precious specific class, object, or person. The moment you know you’re responsible, successful, and knowledgeable all in one is the importance of college. The learning from our mistakes and celebrating our small but mighty daily victories is the real and hidden purpose of college. Networking with friends and professors to get to our end goals and careers, learning a few cooking skills from mom over the phone, and having it somewhat all together is harder to learn than memorizing chemistry equations. Whether you’re a freshman or senior, having the finally feeling is the most important feeling and determination a college student can have, so go find it.
