Your Social Media Guide to San Francisco's Best

By Kimia Madani on February 7, 2013

When I first moved to San Francisco a year ago, a mix of emotions swirled through my heart and mind — the foremost of which was an overwhelming need to hit the ground running, as well as a slight sense of loss as to what, exactly, that entailed.  In other words: what to do, what to do?  So many places to go!  Not to mention new restaurants to try; clubs, bars and events to check out; funky thrift stores and hole in the wall cafés to discover; along with what seemed like countless festivals and parades to attend.

What, then, to tackle first?  Of course, as those of us who live here know, maneuvering the many streets, events, museums, restaurants, nightlife and, yes, occasional tourist attractions (especially on a college student’s budget) can be more than a little tricky.  Thanks to the world of social media, however, I’ve put together a compilation of assorted websites, apps and links to help you discover the best and often cheapest things to try in this amazing city.

First off, check out Funcheap’s San Francisco City Guide — otherwise known as the SF resident’s guide to all things fun and cheap (ha, ha), divvied up into a calendar of events taking place in the city.  Events are posted weekly on the site, with approximate pricing of tickets (when necessary) conveniently listed alongside each event; along with the more than likely chance that said events will be free.

Next, take a look at 47 Things to Do in San Francisco, located here.  Different restaurants, tourist and shopping attractions, and more are divided up and drawn out on a colorful, interactive map of the city.  Great for those who are new to or don’t reside in SF, or simply those who want to show off their extensive knowledge of all that the city has to offer with their friends!

Big on the music scene here?  If you just so happen to be an electronic music junkie like myself, then you’ll fall in love with SFEDM.com.  Also offered as an iPhone and Android app, SFEDM is the perfect way to stay up-to-date with the many EDM-related events occurring in San Francisco.  Big ups from me on this one, I’ve been using it for months!

Want to find the best deals in SF?  (And let’s face it, most of us do!)  Try Living on the Cheap in San Francisco (check it out here); an excellent way to experience the vibrant city culture without annihilating your wallet . . . well, not too badly, anyway.

As a newer addition to my repertoire of San Francisco-related miscellany, I have recently discovered the wonder that is the Sidewalk app, a great way to connect with others in your neighborhood or those surrounding you, as well as tuning into bigger, city-wide events.  My Twitter and Instagram favorites include @SFist and @KarltheFog.  SFist regularly posts interesting and relevant articles all about the city, one of the most recent of which was posted today: 7 Reasons to Love San Francisco.  Follow @KarltheFog on Instagram to see some seriously fantastic photography with clever, pithy captions to go along with them.
