San Francisco has a new tourist attraction, and it’s lighting up the skies this March.

On March 5, San Francisco’s Bay Bridge will display a light show using LED lights. The show will begin at 8:30 p.m. The Bay Lights, as it is called, is the world’s largest LED light sculpture, scaling at about 500 feet and 1.8 miles in width. The project installation will cost about $8 million for a two-year show going on from dusk until 2 a.m., and is currently tracking at about $6 million, according to the Bay Lights website.

Leo Villareal, 45, the New York artist who set up and programmed each one of the 25,000 lights since last year. The project was proposed in 2011, for the 75th anniversary of the Bay Bridge’s opening in 1936.

“I always begin with the sight, that’s whats really important to me,” says Villareal in an interview. “I look at what exists, what is given. And certainly here with the Bay Bridge we have this monumental structure; the American sublime, the beautiful framework, the incredible location.”

The attraction will play on the northern face of the bridge, looking out toward the piers. This project is hoping to bring money and visitors to the Embarcadero waterfront – both citizens of San Francisco and tourists from all over the world.

So where are the best places to catch the magic?

Although the piers may be the closest to the wonder, they are not the only place to catch sight of the light show this Tuesday. Telegraph Hill is known for overlooking the San Francisco skyline and the Bay Bridge, and it is another area where people may catch a glimpse of the attraction. Also, several boat companies are cashing in on the grand opening of Bay Lights: Blue and Gold Fleet is selling tickets priced at $80 dollars for a boat ride to provide you with an optimal view of the lights.

If you can’t make it out there, don’t fret, because the website will be streaming it live beginning at 8:30 p.m.
