10 Up-And-Coming Artists You Need To Listen To

By Victoria Robertson on December 15, 2014

There are so many multi-talented artists out there that aren’t recognized for their unbelievable musical abilities. While artists Sam Smith, Tori Kelly and Meghan Trainor finally make their way to the top, there are still several artists left on the ground working their way up.

So to help them out a bit, here are 10 up-and-coming artists you will want to pay attention to.

1. Florence Arnold:

Known as Florrie, this 26-year-old British singer, songwriter, drummer and model far surpasses what many would consider a triple-threat. Her songs showcase her multitude of talents with a pure sound that music fans will love.

Her lyrics are reminiscent of Sia with their story-like qualities and her voice has a tone that fans of modern pop will adore.

Song Recommendation: “Little White Lies

2. Abel Tesfaye:

Abel Tesfaye, more commonly known as The Weeknd, is a 24-year-old Canadian that was discovered by Drake on YouTube. It didn’t take long for fame to catch up with him and before he was even able to release his first album, “Trilogy,” he caught himself in the limelight.

The Weeknd has a unique R&B sound, and any fans of Chris Brown, Drake or even Frank Ocean will want to keep an eye on this one. While he is a fairly popular artist already, I think his popularity is only starting to grow and it won’t be long before he becomes a household name.

3. Zak Waters:

Zak Waters is a Los Angeles singer, songwriter, DJ and producer that released his first album in 2013 and has been finding fame at his feet ever since.

Fans of Jason Mraz will love his smooth voice and light beats as well as the numerous romantic lyrics interwoven with light humor. Again, an artist with this much talent is hard to ignore.

Song Recommendation: “Sleeping In My T-Shirt

4. Jetta:

This 25-year-old indie pop star has a natural talent that fans of Christina Perri, Beyonce and Mary Lambert will quickly fall in love with.

Her songs have deep messages and her voice conveys those messages beautifully: what more can you ask for in an up-and-coming artist?

Song Recommendation: “Feels Like Coming Home

5. Banks:

Full name Jillian Rose Banks, Banks is another singer/songwriter brought to us straight out of L.A. Her album “Goddess” is out now, and it’s one that you’re going to want to take a listen to.

Her songs are enveloped by a darker tone reminiscent of Lana Del Rey and Lorde. So anyone seeking an artist that’s arguably “different,” take a listen to Banks.

Song Recommendation: “Drowning

6. Lo-Fang:

Lo-Fang, full name Matthew Jordan Hemerlein, is a 30-year-old singer/songwriter as well as a classically trained musician. His debut album, “Blue Film,” was created in the artist’s travels in the U.S. and around the world over the past three years.

As far as sound goes, Lo-Fang is similar to artists Sam Smith and John Legend in terms of vocal range and pure talent.

Song Recommendation: “When We’re Fire

7. Betty Who:

I think Betty Who can best be described as unique. She is a 23-year-old Australian born Jessica Anne Newham.

As far as comparison goes, her sound is similar to that of Katy Perry with a look that draws from a combination of P!nk’s signature hairdo and transformative style.

Song Recommendation: “Somebody Loves You

8. Benjamin Booker:

American singer/songwriter and guitarist Benjamin Booker blew me away with his individualistic style and unbelievable talent. At only 25-years-old, Booker is starting out his music career on a fantastic note.

I recommend picking up a copy of his self-titled debut album, especially if you are a fan of that nostalgic, classic bluesy sound or even anthem-like ’80s rock.

Song Recommendation: “Have You Seen My Son?

9. Leo Justi:

Leo Justi is a Brazilian DJ that incorporates different sounds into his music that will make you want to get up and dance.

His songs are culturally some of the most diverse I’ve seen from up-and-coming artists, and for this reason, I found him to stand out from the rest.

Song Recommendation: “Gaitero

10. Annie Eve:

Annie Eve is an indie-folk singer/songwriter that’s released her first album, “Sunday ‘91.”

Fans of The Pretty Reckless will find Annie Eve’s style similar to that of Taylor Momsen, although her voice is still distinguishable. The songs have a calming quality to them, perfect for college students that just need to relax.

Song Recommendation: “Basement

While I haven’t even scratched the surface of what music has to offer in terms of up-and-coming artists, make sure to watch out for these 10, as before you know it, everyone will know their names.
