The Struggles of Traveling Home From College

By Alexis Angelini on February 28, 2017

For out-of-staters and travelers alike, it can be difficult to get home from your university to your home. Whether it’s public transportation like buses or trains, long car rides, or even plane rides, it can be a rough experience trying to get home for a nice cooked meal or to do some laundry.

Here are some of the struggles we feel when we travel home from college.

1. Long travel times

After sitting on a plane/train/bus for what seems like countless hours it can be a little bit much. You feel like you want to pull your hair out and just scream! You urge yourself not to check the time every minute in order not to let yourself see how much time you have left.

2. Gross restrooms

Let’s just all agree that public restrooms are not necessarily … the cleanest things on the planet.

3. Multiple stops

Delays, layoffs, missing a mode of transportation — the list of frustrating situations keeps growing! At least a layover or delay can allow you to explore the area or take a break for a moment.

4. Having to deal with a lack of (or hardly any) internet access

Even if there is Wi-Fi it can be shoddy. Try to keep calm and breathe; hopefully, service will come back soon. If there’s no hope for internet access attempt not to panic and try to read a book or a magazine.

5. Trying to entertain yourself

If there is no Wi-Fi, and you’re not a book fan, things can get real boring real fast.

6. Eating whatever you have available

When you are traveling and you are a foodie, it can be difficult, to say the least. Bus stop or plane food is not something that we crave for a reason. You might want to pack some snacks to ensure you get to eat something you actually enjoy.

7. Sitting in one spot for hours

You start to get impatient. When are you getting off? How much is left in the journey? When can you sleep in your own bed? What home cooked meal will you first have when you arrive? While sitting there for hours your legs probably start to get crampy, you need to stretch, and your butt might even go numb.

8. Having to handle all of your luggage on your own

Trying to bring everything home that you might need can result in too many bags. Attempting to carry all of them can be frustrating, to say the least. Maybe next time decide if you really will need that extra pair of pants before you pack your suitcases.

9. Navigating solo

It can be difficult not to have your family or a friend help guide you through these transportation stations. Independence can be nice but also a tad scary. Try to stay calm and ask for help if you need it!

10. The smells of transportation

Thousands of people traveling through tight cramped spaces can end in some disgusting smells. We try not to think about exactly what has caused the odors and just try to get to our destination.

When you finally arrive at your home, it is such a feeling of relief! Good luck getting home, collegiates!
