WTF is R. Kelly's Problem Anyways?

By Oore Olayinka on August 10, 2017

Is anyone else as tired as I am of seeing R. Kelly’s face in the news for sex offenses? Well, guess what? R. Kelly has done it again. Our singer and song writer friend Robert Sylvester Kelly has popped up on the sex offender’s radar again. On July 17, BuzzFeed released an article with reports on R. Kelly being tied to a sex cult. Yes, you read that right, a sex cult.

According to the BuzzFeed article, the parents of Joycelyn Savage, a 19-year-old singer, accused R. Kelly of holding their daughter against her will. The reports state that it all started on May 23, 2015, when R. Kelly agreed to help the girl with her CD and even went as far as flying her out to an Indio concert. Two years later, the parents are still fighting to bring their daughter back home.

Three former members of Kelly’s inner circle have confirmed the sex cult story. Cheryl Mack, Kitti Jones, and Asante McGee came forward with the information that six women live in properties rented by Kelly in Chicago and the Atlanta suburbs. Apparently, he controls every aspect of their lives — what they eat, how they dress, when they bathe, when they sleep, and how they engage in sexual encounters that he records.

According to Mack, who worked as Kelly’s personal assistant for a year and a half, the women in Kelly’s entourage initially think, “This is R. Kelly, I’m going to live a lavish lifestyle. No. You have to ask for food. You have to ask to go use the bathroom … [Kelly] is a master at mind control … He is a puppet master.”

Okay, let’s back up a little and take a trip down memory lane. Remember when R. Kelly married famous late singer Aaliyah Haughton in 1994 when she was just 15? The two first met in 1991 when she was just 12. Three years later he got married to her using a falsified marriage certificate that lied that Aaliyah was 18. Eventually, the marriage was annulled but that was the first red flag. The track Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number is apparently based on him. Is that not sickening?

Next is the 1996 lawsuit against him by Tiffany Hawkins. According to the suit, Kelly had engaged in a sexual relationship with Hawkins who was then 15, as well as with her 14-year-old friend. Kelly then ended the relationship with her when she turned 18 and a mentally bruised Hawkins slit her wrists in a suicide attempt. The case was settled in 1998 and ended with Hawkins signing a confidentiality agreement. Now, isn’t that convenient? A confidentiality agreement sealing the details of the 100-page lawsuit, making sure that the information from the lawsuit never gets to the public. Cool.

If only it ended there. In the next big case, Kelly allegedly picked up a girl on the night of her prom, impregnated her, and paid for an abortion. It all came out when Patrice Jones, the victim, sued him in 2002. So many lawsuits and still no convictions?!

Still, that same year, the famous videotape in which R. Kelly is seen peeing in a girl’s mouth surfaced. What manner of sick do you have to be to purposely pee in someone’s mouth for sexual gratification? To top it all off, the victim hadn’t even reached the legal age of consent? This charge resulted in a six-year trial. The singer and his legal team managed to delay the commencement of the trial with many motions. The man even took a sick leave for an appendectomy. The biggest piece of evidence in the trial is the 27-minute long videotape showing a then 24-year-old Kelly engaging in graphic sex acts with a girl as young as 13 at the time. A 13-year-old? How disgusting.

On May 21, 2008, Time Magazine painstakingly reported the details of the video. The report says the following:

“In the video’s opening scene, a man in red pants, a baggy white t-shirt and a diamond stud in his left ear — similar to Kelly’s — sits in a wood-paneled room that resembles a space that detectives photographed in the home Kelly once owned in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. Then, the man sticks his penis into the female’s mouth and offers dialogue that seems taken straight from a porn movie. Jurors who’d taken meticulous notes throughout the day suddenly stopped. One twentysomething white juror put a hand across one of his ears. One middle-aged black woman lowered her head, obviously disgusted.”

How gruesome.

Somehow, R. Kelly managed to get off. Many people believe it is because the 13-year-old victim was never called to the stand. Neither was Kelly, come to think of it. There was also much debate about a mole. The man in the videotape had a mole on his back much like one Kelly himself has. However, his lawyers counteracted that fact with the claim that the mole in the video could’ve been a computer glitch, or someone tampering with the evidence. The lawyers never even disputed the fact that the video was shot in one of Kelly’s homes. Yet Kelly was still acquitted.

The list goes on and on, with his recent sex cult allegations topping the list. But what do you really expect from someone whose his image is mostly based on sex? Take for example his 2005 “hip-hopera” titled Trapped In The Closet. Or his club banger Ignition? Maybe he was talking about underage sex in Bump and Grind when he crooned “But there is something that I must confess (to you), I don’t see nothing wrong with a little bump and grind.”

In no way am I justifying this man’s filthy acts — far from it! I personally want him behind bars. I just wish he would hurry up and get convicted as soon as possible so girls can be free from his predatory ways.

Just your regular teenager trying to turn her passion for writing into a career.
