An Open Letter To Creative Writers

By Kennisha Crawford on July 30, 2018

For us creative writers, it can be hard to try to figure out and find our “place” in a society that is consumed with reading about celebrity drama and everyday regular people fighting in McDonald’s. You want to write about something meaningful that will get people to think better and follow their dreams but can’t seem to find an audience that is necessarily willingly to read what you have to say.

I myself am working towards being an accomplished creative writer so I am speaking from first-hand knowledge about these struggles. I have looked ceaselessly, and am still looking, for the “right” publication that will be a great fit for my writing style, which ranges from giving fashion tips to advising on how to be your best self. I have yet to find a publication home, which can be so discouraging at times but, I will not give up and you shouldn’t either.

Being a creative writer can be difficult when you are not “established”. You have to work on building your portfolio that will showcase your various styles of writing along with having a good amount of different publications under your belt that have published your work. It can be easy to find a writing internship, usually unpaid, but finding that “home” that fits your work, along with offering you a great salary, can be the definition of strenuous.

What is one to do when you have to pay your bills but don’t want to give up on your dream of being the accomplished creative writer you know you are destined to be? I’ll tell you, you keep writing. There are millions of people working a 9 to 5 right now that are utterly miserable. I can speak to that first-hand as well because I worked at a company for close to 8 years that paid me well, but I was beyond miserable and depressed. I knew I was meant for more but was terrified to take the leap of faith to believe in myself. Until one day, I decided to take a chance on myself and my gift of writing and quit my job. The road to be being an accomplished creative writer has not been easy but, I have also never been as happy nor felt as free and my writing continuously grows and improves.

The point I am getting at is this, we creative writers have a God-given gift to create the most riveting stories that are divulged from our experiences and/or wildly vivid imaginations. God would not have given us the gift of writing if we were not supposed to use it to better ourselves, our lives and the lives of others. Words are one of the most powerful things in this world and we creative writers are its gatekeepers. So, if you are currently feeling as if your writing is not taking you where you need it to, or you feel like you should just give up altogether to settle for mediocre life, I say to you PLEASE KEEP WRITING! Your gift will make room for you! JUST PLEASE KEEP WRITING!
