The Evolution of Technology

By Josh Baker on August 7, 2019

We live in an era where technology supposedly knows no boundaries. We can prevent and remove biological infections without severely damaging the patients, communicate with billions of people everywhere instantly, and construct skyscrapers and arenas within a matter of months. Some may wonder how we conjured the materials necessary to accomplish such astounding feats, or why what we have was not invented sooner. The answer is fairly simple: we build upon the technology and resources that already exist.

Take our forms of communication, for example. Over the first few thousand years of human evolution, we developed methods of communication such as the printing press, Morse Code, and the telephone. Thomas Edison perfected the light bulb; which also utilized electricity over great spaces. Over the following decades, the innovations of radio, television and the Internet strengthened the rapid distribution of news and information, which paved the way for even smoother forms of communication, such as email and texting.

Now, we have Google Chrome, which gives us even more power than ever. Students can work on assignments with other students and teachers without being in the same room, reducing the time needed to work on them. Students can also check assignments after submitting them to check for any missed errors, and unsubmit them for the time required to make any final adjustments. Google Classroom, a web service that connects every student and teacher in the school, is where teachers can create, distribute, and accept assignments instantaneously. Google Chrome has especially saved me from disaster on multiple occasions at school. In college, I enjoy the luxury of typing up essays while simultaneously observing notes I have typed up for the same assignment. It is much easier than having to write an entire essay by hand. Today, schools all over the country have installed programs like Google Chrome and Turnitin for the better of the students and teachers.

Another major technological advancement the internet has graced education with is turnitin.com, which describes itself as “an internet-based plagiarism-detection service.” This assists students in learning how to write their own material and avoid using someone else’s words.

We can also read textbooks online, which saves paper and preserves the environment. Reading textbooks online also gives students the ability to highlight sentences and images to help them memorize the necessary materials for future tests. You also do not have to worry about deliveries, late returns, lugging them around, I have also used certain social media sites to communicate with classmates while working on filming visual assignments in college; this makes it easier to organize times when everyone in our group is available and when we can focus on editing or reaching out to people to interview. These advanced methods of communication and interaction have opened up new possibilities for making the educational experience and community both easier and more social. I also have an app from my university that allows me to check the availability of laundry machines and alerts me when my laundry is done. There is no need for loose change for vending machines when I can simply swipe my school ID card to satisfy my cravings.

The metamorphosis of technology and science has left a massive impact on the human race. Many have pros and cons, but they still push the envelope of what our minds and actions are capable of. Who knows how technology will improve our lives next?
