Experience to Look For On A Babysitter's Resume

By Ashley Paskill on March 5, 2021

Many college students choose to babysit because it allows them to have flexible hours while they are in school. However, as a parent, you want to ensure that you are hiring the best person to take care of your kids and not just someone who is in it solely for the money. In order to be sure you have the right person for the job, take a look at their resume to see what experience may show that they are the perfect babysitter for you.

CPR certification

While many students may know how to perform CPR, in order to be certified, there are classes to take and tests to pass. If the potential babysitter shows that they have been CPR certified, it shows that they have taken initiative and gone above and beyond. It also shows that they know the proper methods for adults and for children, so your kids will be in safe hands should anything happen. However, make sure their certifications are up-to-date as many programs require retraining to keep the procedures fresh.

Babysitting and childcare experience

One way to know that the person is a good babysitter is that they have previous babysitting experience and can point to references to demonstrate their abilities. When looking at a potential babysitter’s resume, see what experience they have to see if they have babysat in the past or if they have worked in a childcare setting. Just be sure they have experience working with kids the age of your kid or kids. An infant requires different care skills than a child who is 10, for example.

If your kids are school-aged, you might want a babysitter who has tutoring experience or familiarity with educational software and concepts. This will ensure that the babysitter can assist your child(ren) with any schoolwork they have. At the very least, you can see if the potential sitter has good grades or has been recognized for their academics.

Experience with appliances

While babysitting requires that the person watching your kid(s) be good with children, the person should also be able to do simple things around the house such as running the dishwasher or doing laundry in the washer and dryer. You may also want them to help cook meals, so they need to know how to cook basic meals using the stove or oven. Also, be sure to check their resume for things that mention basic cleaning to help keep your house germ-free. Remember, your babysitter is not a cleaning or cooking service, but they should be able to do basic chores to help you out.

Leadership experience

While your babysitter should be friendly and nice, they should also be able to enforce rules and take charge when needed. This is especially true if you designate a specific bedtime or say no tv or snacks after a certain time. The kid(s) may try to persuade the sitter to go against the rules, but a good sitter will stay firm while helping them do the alternative actions that need to be taken. This kind of trait can be seen in being a club officer or being involved in student government.

American Red Cross babysitting course

Even if the potential sitter has not done any babysitting yet, you may want to look to see if they have taken a babysitting class through the Red Cross. This class helps them know what to do in various circumstances that may arise as well as helps them understand the kids. The course also teaches first aid and CPR, which is essential for keeping your child(ren) safe.

Experience using soft skills

While many of the things above have concrete hard skills that can show that the potential sitter is prepared, it is also important that they have soft skills that can help ensure great care for your kid(s). These soft skills include preparedness, attentiveness, and lovingness. It can be difficult to showcase these on a resume, but if the potential sitter lists references on their resume, you can reach out to them and ask questions about the sitter’s personality. If one of the references is a parent that hired the sitter, see if you can find out what the kids thought of the sitter, especially since your kids will be spending the most time with them.

Previous job experience

Even if a potential babysitter does not have babysitting experience, it does not mean they are not capable of the job. Having job experience of any kind helps show that they are trustworthy and can handle the responsibilities of babysitting. Many jobs help establish the qualities needed to be a great babysitter, including patience, kindness, and creativity. If you see that a person has been at a job for a long time, it can signal that they are well-liked and reliable.

Hiring a sitter can be difficult since they will be taking care of your kid(s), but looking at their resume for experience can help you determine whether they are a good fit or not.
