Tips For the Natural Hair Trend

By Aurelie Mathieu on September 27, 2012

Natural hair is a direction most black women are taking now. Instead of the chemical relaxer or the weave, many women are becoming confident enough to rock the hair they were born with. Truth is, natural hair is not for everyone or they just do not know how to manage it yet. There are women who do it as a fashion statement or trend and there are others who do it as a lifestyle change. Some women do it as a cost effective alternative but it may not be as cost effective as it appears.

Natural hair does not look right on everyone. Not everyone’s friends are honest enough to tell them so they end up walking everywhere looking a mess. If after a year or two your hair is still looking brittle and dry, it may be time to look at other options. The keratin treatment does a pretty nice job without permanently altering the texture of your hair.

Constantly getting new ideas on blogs is a great way of treating natural hair. My favorite website to use for hairstyle inspiration is Pinterest.com. They have styles for every type of hair on there and also recipes for homemade hair products. It’s also important to put stuff on your hair that you would not mind putting on your skin. The hair products that touch your scalp will often end up on your pillow and on your face, which may cause you to break out more than before.

Trim your ends regularly; it will help your hair grow faster. My mother used to only let us cut my hair on a full moon, supposedly it made the hair grow faster. Instead of washing your hair every week, do a co-wash in between to keep it looking fresh and moisturized. That simply means just using a conditioner without the shampoo.

Discover shea butter! It does it all: hair moisturizer, lotion, sunscreen, skin rejuvenation, healing and protection. Use it on your hair and scalp. It does not leave your heavy like other hair greases. Use it on your skin for everyday moisture along with a good black soap. It takes away any marks, reduces stretch marks and makes you look younger. Get the best shea butter available on the market at www.awaskincare.com and use code 0522 for free shipping! It’s so worth it. You may also love Jojoba Oil. It helps your hair in scalp but also makes your skin less oily. You can find it at any health store. Use it to wash your face every day or as a make up remover. It will make your skin feel amazing!

Do not be afraid to experiment in the kitchen. I’ve made many random conditioner by using only what I had in my kitchen. Last time I mixed avocado, honey, jojoba oil, and coconut oil and it left my hair feeling bouncy and moisturized. I let it sit under a shower cap for two hours and washed it off after. It’s amazing how simple it can be. Other common kitchen ingredients include eggs, mayonnaise, and yogurt.

Taking a stroll down the beauty section in your local health store may also help you discover new things. That’s how I found out about the amazing jojoba oil.
