Zombie Apocalypse at SFSU

By Uloop Archives on October 21, 2012

On October 18th, around 11 A.M., San Francisco State was been attacked by a herd  of zombies led by Improv Nation’s Molly Sanchez. The starving living dead staggered throughout the entire campus, seeking out potential victims. Adorning torn, rugged clothing drenched in fake blood, these zombies definitely brought life to their characters. Michelle Jones, one of the participants, expressed her thoughts on the Zombie Apocalypse, saying, “It was a lot of fun. We were able to unite together, we learned more about others within our group, and we even got to meet new people. We were able to do something that doesn’t happen often which was entertaining for not only us but for others watching us. It’s a perfect way to also celebrate the next up-coming holiday, Halloween.”

Alongside the mass of zombies, Eddie Ramirez had dispatched his “undercover” group, WOMBAT, to put an end to the invasion. Armed with Nerf guns and plastic swords, the group took the zombies head on. Several of the WOMBAT members embodied different characters and personalities during combat. You are probably wondering–How do you know which side wins? Kyle Donnelly, a recruited member of WOMBAT, answers, “No matter what, the zombies will always win. The point of the zombie apocalypse is to spread the word of our next show.” After all the WOMBAT members were converted, everyone finished off their performance with “Thriller”.

Pitting the zombies and WOMBAT against each other proved to be a humorous, theatrical scene for the bystanders to enjoy. Victor Quach was not a part of the Zombie Apocalypse, but was one of many outsiders who watched. He says, “I think the whole Zombie Apocalypse is awesome, because I’m a huge fan of zombies myself. I enjoy playing video games involved with zombies like Resident Evil or Day-Z.” Another bystander, John Bob had actually witnessed a zombie attack on his friend. He laughs after recalling the moment, and says, “I think the Zombie Apocalypse is funny because it’s like how it is portrayed in movies.”

I found the whole event to be entertaining, because the zombies and WOMBAT members stayed in character. We normally don’t see these kinds of performances here on campus. Having the Improv members converting not only WOMBAT members but even outsiders was a creative way to let people in on their upcoming show and encourage them to join Improv Nation.
