SFSU English Professor Recommendation: Sarah Fama

By Chantel Carnes on January 16, 2013

Do you want a professor who cannot communicate well with you or the rest of the class?

Would you prefer a professor who makes you work hard by piling on tons of homework?

Most of all, would you like an English professor who is not capable of taking your “ok, pretty good” essays and helping you form them into “great, outstanding” essays?

If you answered yes to all of these questions then Sarah Fama; English 104 and 105, professor at San Francisco State University is not the teacher for you.

During my first semester of college, I chose Sarah Fama as my English professor. At the time, I did not know her teaching methods, her work assignment load, or her grading strategies. In first meeting her, she was extremely nice and enjoyed getting to know her students; however, her nice personality should not be misinterpreted as weakness and mistaken for a “push over” type of professor.

She assigns homework just like any other professor. The homework is only difficult if you choose to make it that way. Her teaching methods revolve around short Summary/Response essays, challenging and stimulating reading, class  discussions,  early-morning creative free writers, and peer reviews.

Fortunately, there are no tests in the class; your grade is based upon your attendance, class participation, homework, and occasional essays. In the class, we focused on writing efficient essays, reading at a difficult level, and creating outstanding papers.

Some English professors are great communicators with their students, but they make you read five chapters a night and write two essays every day. Then you have professors who barely give any homework and do not require you to show up for class, but then give you a test on material you haven’t covered yet.Sarah Fama is the complete opposite of these types of professors. She communicates great with her students, and keeps the work load reasonable.

If you are searching for an easy English professor who hands out A’s without making you work hard and does not advance your skills, she is not the professor for you. However, if you want a professor who is going to push you to do better, work hard, and require you to do your best, then I highly recommend Professor Sarah Fama.

I am currently a Sophomore majoring in Journalism and minoring in Criminal Justice at SFSU. I have a passion for writing and debating. I plan to receive my BA in journalism, go to law school, work my way up in the world of news/sports/entertainment broadcasting, work as a criminal lawyer, and hopefully one day own my own magazine company!
