Greek life – ZPB

By Chantel Carnes on July 16, 2013

Patience, love, responsibility, trust, sisterhood, brotherhood, sacrifice, friendship. These are some of the things people learn when they become a part of Greek life; it’s not just about the things you do in that sorority or fraternity, but it’s also about what you learn. Greek life has been a part of San Francisco State University since the year 1928. SFSU has approximately sixteen recognized women-only Greek organizations, nine men-only Greek organizations, and four coed groups. Each and every one of these organizations has contributed to the amazing history of Greek life.

Zeta Phi Beta is one of the most admired and respected sororities that stand for Scholarship, Sisterly Love, Service, and Finer Womanhood. They were founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. in the year 1920 by Myrtle Tyler Faithful and Viola Tyler Goings along with three others. There are close to one hundred chapters that are very active and are continuing to grow. The ladies of Zeta Phi Beta especially on the campus of San Francisco State have become an inspiration to young girls. When deciding to join a sorority or fraternity, I’ve learned that you have to look for certain qualities and attributes that you find important and see which affiliation possesses those qualities. You also have to look at what their goals and motivations are and what they focus on and why. Being a part of Greek life is a great way to get involved on campus, meet new people, and to become a part of something bigger than yourself. “Individually unique, but together complete”.

Being a part of a sorority or fraternity is a great experience that creates sisterly and brotherly bonds between one another. It is not just about the fun parties or the “swagged” out gear that comes along with being in a Greek, those are just some of the perks. If you are considering joining a sorority or fraternity, take the time to research and participate in every Greek organization and find out which one best suits you. Do not join based on which group is rocking your favorite color or which group throws the best parties; base your decision on which group stands for what you believe in, focuses on the goals you want to achieve, and which group you most connect with. Greek life is a big part of many college campuses and once you join, you are a part of a bond that can never be broken.

I am currently a Sophomore majoring in Journalism and minoring in Criminal Justice at SFSU. I have a passion for writing and debating. I plan to receive my BA in journalism, go to law school, work my way up in the world of news/sports/entertainment broadcasting, work as a criminal lawyer, and hopefully one day own my own magazine company!
